Milo Custer writings relating to the Kickapoo Indians, 1906-1916.

Five bound autograph manuscript and typescript notebooks written by Milo Custer. Four of the notebooks appear to be later drafts of portions of a notebook entitled "A Visit to the Kickapoos, in 1906," dated Nov. 3rd, 1906. In addition to this manuscript describing the Kickapoo Indians, their church, leaders, dance, and government school, the notebook also includes "The doctrines of Keeannakuk," as well as notes on the Pottawatomie language, Kickapoo vocabulary (gathered from Minnie Wawasuk and George Masquequa), names of signers of the Treaty of Edwardsville, and a bibliography of Kickapoo Historical Material (and their location). Another manuscript notebook contains the Kickapoo vocabulary and Kannekuk's doctrine, noting that the words were gathered from Minnie Wawahsuk, great-granddaughter of the Prophet Kannekuk, George Masquequa, and Arthur W. Whitewater. This notebook also includes the Bureau of American Ethnology booklet "Alphabet for Use in Recording Indian Languages," annotated by Custer. Two other notebooks are typescript variants of this material, dated 1911, and 1916. These notebooks are accompanied by a manuscript notebook, dated 1906, with vocabulary, the Kannekuk doctrine, and a sketch and description of a Kickapoo prayer stick.
